As the 34th manager of the San Francisco Giants, Dusty Baker has managed 1,070 games (5th longest tenure for the club) and had 558 victories to rank him second among Giants managers behind Roger Craig (586-566). As a two time Manager of the Year (’93 & ’97) winner, Baker entered his 8th year with the Giants in the 2000 season. He has also won the NL Award twice, joining Tommy Lasorda (Los Angeles ’83 & ’88) and Jim Leyland (Pittsburgh ’90 & ’92). Before his managing days, Dusty Baker enjoyed a prestigious playing career, spending nearly 16 full seasons with Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland. He finished his career with .278 average, 242 home runs, and 1,013 RBI. His career honors have included the NL All Star team (’81 & ’82), four League Championship Series (’77, ’78, ’81—Dodgers’ World Championship, & ’83), the Gold Glove award in 1981, and the Silver Slugger team in ’80 and ’81. Even though he began his career with the Braves, in L.A. Baker hit his career high 30 home runs in 1977 to become part of the Dodgers’ record-setting 30-homer foursome (with Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, and Reggie Smith). In 1990, he was voted to the All-Time Dodger team by L.A. fans during the club’s 100th anniversary.
Dusty, who guided the Cubs to the National League Central Division championship in 2003 (his first season with the club), signed a four-year contract with the team in November 2002...led the Cubs to back-to-back winning seasons (2003-2004) for the first time since 1971-1972...has gone to the postseason nine times during his big league career (four times as a manager, four times as a player and once as a coach)...has gone to five World Series including the 2002 Fall Classic with the Giants...won a championship ring as an outfielder with Los Angeles in 1981...enters the 2006 campaign with 1,096 big league managerial victories...in 2004, he became the 50th manager in Major League history to record 1,000 victories...the milestone win came August 30 in a 5-2 win over Montreal..
