Overall: 1st Round Draft Pick for the NFL Champions Pittsburgh Steelers. Holmes redshirted in 2002. He started four of the 12 games he played in 2003, finishing with 32 catches for 549 yards (17.2 ypc) and seven touchdowns. As a sophomore in 2004, Holmes earned second-team All-Bit Ten honors with a team-high 55 catches for 769 yards (14.4 ypc) and seven touchdowns, while also averaging 10.7 yards per punt return and 23.2 yards per kickoff return. As a junior in 2005, Holmes earned first-team All-Big Ten honors with a team-high 53 catches for 977 yards (18.4 ypc) and 11 touchdowns, while also averaging 12.8 yards per punt return and 21.7 yards per kickoff return Holmes has two children (both sons). Holmes shares a lot of similarities with former Wisconsin standout Lee Evans (first round pick of the Bills in 2004), including just decent size, explosive speed and outstanding hand-eye coordination. Holmes is a very good athlete with the playing speed, elusiveness and explosiveness to make big plays running with the ball in the open field. He has very good vision and instincts running with the ball, follows blockers well and has an explosive burst through the hole and the speed to take plays the distance. He runs very smooth routes and has a good burst out of cuts to get separatiuon and uses his body well to shield cornerbacks from the ball. He has the hands, body control and coordination to reach out and catch the ball away from his body and can adjust to make the tough catch easily.
